I want to go over some of my other "essentials" in the miscellaneous category, but today I want to talk about a foundation project that I am doing this January. I have a large number of foundations, most of which I bought based on recommendations of Taylor Wynn, who has an amazing YouTube channel. I love watching her videos and I like her personality a lot. She has a great series called 15 Days of Foundation and she regularly does Foundation Fridays where she reviews single foundations. Her skin looks amazing! She is beautiful!
The sad fact of the matter is, my skin does not like the same foundations her skin likes. Let's keep in mind that I am probably a solid 25+ years older than her and we live in completely different climates. I also think she tends to prefer a higher coverage foundation than I do. One of the things that got me into the idea of doing a replacement only no-buy was the fact that I would run out and buy nearly any foundation that Taylor reviewed well and none of them ever worked on my skin. My favorite foundation (Candid) is one that Taylor didn't "mind that much" (I think she looks amazing all day in that video). This was one makeup product that I bought completely on a whim without checking any reviews first.
Here is the state of my current foundation collection:
I am never going to use all of these up, and I really don't want to force myself to because I dislike many of them. In the interest of giving myself something "new" to play with through my no buy month I am going to wear each of these for an entire day at work, give a short review and make a final decision about decluttering them. I have tried all of these foundations before and decided that I didn't like them, but I am interesting in giving them all another fair shot because I have an application method that I have developed since using them last that I really like and I want to give them all a fair shot.
You may ask why I am doing all of this when I have already stated that I have a foundation that I like and that I am required to purchase for the rest of the year without trying anything new. As much as I love the Candid foundation, I am not a fan of the fact that it isn't cruelty free. I would like the coverage to be slightly better and a slightly more glowy finish would be great. It is possible that one of these might fit the bill, though it is doubtful.
First up is the Pacifica Alight Clean foundation in 37WL Warm Light. It would be great if this would work out for me because it is vegan and doesn't have yucky stuff in it, but on the other hand, I would be worried that it would get discontinued since Pacifica isn't a huge brand. I can tell you right away that this one is a little too dark for my skin and if I end up loving it, I would need to buy the proper shade at some point in time. Here is Taylor's video review
This foundation goes on well and the initial finish is really pretty. It is glowy without looking oily. The coverage is slightly higher than I would normally look for, but it doesn't look cakey right after application. I was able to blend blush on top without too much work and the color isn't perfect, but it isn't going to call for a turtle neck either.

Indoor, right after application
Outdoors, right after application
As you can see, the glowy affect gets a little oily looking outside. There also isn't any blurring or hiding texture effect with this foundation. I would say that it started settling into my pores, lines and wrinkles pretty quickly. This was, of course, a lot less noticeable in real life than in photos.
Not a bad start, but I will have to say that things went pretty rapidly downhill. The foundation never felt great on my skin. I could feel a layer of something for the entire day. I usually don't notice makeup that I am wearing, but I could feel this. It never really dried down and felt sticky and slippery for the entire day. Most importantly, by 5pm, it was mostly gone and looked very patchy.
So this one will be going into a box that I plan to send to Project Beauty Share or the at-risk youth center in my hometown. If I had to give this a rating, I would give it about a 5 out of 10. It starts out pretty well, but doesn't have any sort of longevity.
